Casula Powerhouse
Arts Centre and the Art Gallery of NSW presents
The Archibald Prize
The Archibald Prize is one of Australia’s oldest and most prestigious art awards. Since its inception in 1921, the Prize has been awarded to some of Australia’s most important artists.
From 10 December 2011 until 15 January 2012, the Archibald Prize artworks will be on display at the Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre.
This year’s prize was awarded to Ben Quilty for his portrait of Margaret Olley. When Ben Quilty first asked legendary painter Margaret Olley to sit for him she said no. ‘Her lack of ego is so appealing,’ says Quilty. ‘Margaret didn’t understand why anyone would want to see a portrait of her.’
This year, the Archibald received 798 entries with the prize being judged by the Trustees of the Art Gallery of New South Wales. The Archibald winner received $50,000 for his painting.
