If On A Tropic Night
If on a Tropic Night captures a curious moment in history: that of the rise and fall of Philippine president Ferdinand Marcos. Through video, sculpture and a large intricate flow chart on the floor, the work documents many of the people who took part in the Cold War politics that characterised his 14-year rule. CIA agents, General Douglas MacArthur, U.S. Presidents and Southeast Asian revolutionaries, torturers, cronies and surprisingly, the Beatles are featured. Marcos' career casts an extraordinary light on the interaction of centre and periphery in the global system of power. His flight from the palace, in the dark of the night, anticipated the end of the Cold War era.
