17th Annual Mil-Pra AECG Aboriginal Exhibition & Art Award

Celebrating indigenous art, the MIL-PRA AECG ABORIGINAL EXHIBITION & ART AWARDS is a competition open to all Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander people living in NSW and the ACT. In 2009 the theme of the exhibition is 'Elders Knowing - Elders Showing.'

All mediums are accepted and fourteen awards are up for grabs including one for kids.

This year artists are encouraged to submit work that acknowledges, celebrates and pays respect to Indigenous elders and their teachings.

AWARD CATEGORIES

MIL-PRA AECG AWARD
The $500 Mil-Pra AECG Award is awarded by the Mil-Pra AECG judging committee and was started in 1992. The selected work must relate to the exhibition theme.

BRUCE AND CAROL KENDALL OAM MEMORIAL AWARD
The Bruce and Carol Kendall OAM Memorial Award was introduced in 2003. This $500 Award acknowledges and celebrates the contribution of Bruce and Carol Kendall to the Mil-Pra AECG. Both Carol and Bruce fought for the rights of Indigenous Australians at a local and national level. Carol was particularly active in the pursuit of reconciliation and in the struggle for justice for Indigenous people, who have suffered and who continue to suffer from the policy of forcible removal.

The Award recognises their contribution to the region and particularly their support and encouragement of the Indigenous community through education.

MARIA LOCK ART AWARD
Maria Lock married Robert Lock in 1824. She was the first Aboriginal woman to be granted land in Liverpool. The land is now the site of the Liverpool City Council Chambers on Hoxton Park Road.

This Award was initiated in 1994 by Mark Latham MP, Mayor of the City of Liverpool to acknowledge this significant achievement.

The Maria Lock Art Award has an open theme. The winning artwork is purchased and will become part of the Liverpool City Art, Heritage and Local Studies Collection.

MAYOR’S CHOICE AWARD - LIVERPOOL CITY COUNCIL AWARD
This Award has an open theme. The winning artwork is purchased and will become part of the Liverpool City Art, Heritage and Local Studies Collection.

KARI ABORIGINAL RESOURCES INC. AWARD
Over the past two years Kari Aboriginal Resources Inc. has sponsored this $200 Award, which is open to all artists who enter the Mil-Pra AECG Aboriginal Exhibition and Art Award.

LIVERPOOL WOMEN’S SERVICES AWARD
The Liverpool Women’s Services Award was introduced in 2005 and is open to women artists only. This $500 Award is sponsored by Liverpool Women’s Resource Centre, Joan Harrison Support Services for Women, Liverpool Women’s Health Centre and South West Women’s Housing. The award has an open theme.

STUDENT AWARDS
The Student Awards were introduced in 2003 and are jointly sponsored by the Mil-Pra AECG, Kari Aboriginal Resources Inc., and Eckersleys, Art & Craft Parramatta. Kari awards first prize winners within both the primary and secondary schools categories a $100 prize, while other student winners receive a prize pack from Eckersley’s. All winning students are presented with a certificate.

Students from any school within the South West Sydney region are able to enter their works in this section. The work must have an Aboriginal perspective, but the student does not have to be Aboriginal.
