STRONG WOMEN, STRONG PAINTING, STRONG CULTURE
Aboriginal women's art of the Central and Western Deserts from the Sims Dickson Collection

Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre is proud to host the Strong Women Strong Painting Strong Culture exhibition from Friday 24 June, celebrating the achievements of Aboriginal women artists from across the Central and Western deserts of Australia. This exhibition is presented in partnership with Cessnock Regional Art Gallery.

Senior Ernabella artists Niningka Lewis, Tjunkaya Tapaya, Alison (Milyika) Carroll, director of Ananguku Arts and her husband Pepai Jangala Carroll, chair of Ernabella Arts, will be special guests at the opening and Alison (Milyika) Carroll will introduce the exhibition.

Strong Women Strong Painting Strong Culture is an exhibition featuring works from 42 Aboriginal women artists. The exhibition includes exuberant paintings on canvas, batiks, soft sculpture, carving and etchings, which are characterised by stunning colour and energy.

Keeping the family strong, communicating stories of country and ensuring culture is honoured; the artwork of Indigenous women of the Central and Western deserts is significant to the wellbeing of the community.

Some of the art works will be shown publicly for the first time and reflect the strength, resilience, truth, complexity and the cultural richness of these Aboriginal women.

Strong Women Strong Painting Strong Culture outlines the development of Aboriginal women's contemporary art making in desert country, from early dot painting in the 1980s, through to the evolution of their art making in the 90s, into the dynamic multi-dimensional movement it is today.

The free exhibition will be on display at Casula Powerhouse Art Centre until 7 August 2011.
