AUTUMN SCHOOL HOLIDAYS 2012

Tuesday 10 to Friday 20 April

Come to Casula Powerhouse for another jam-packed school holiday program of workshops and activities. We are continuing our cost-effective way for your children to stay entertained and engaged during the school holidays. Workshops are $15 per child, unless otherwise stated. Enrol in three or more workshops and you’ll only pay $10 per workshop (you must book all workshops at the same time.)

Please note: The three-day performance workshops, workshops for kids 6 months – 5 years, and free events are not included in this discount.

 

Tuesday 10 April

 

Landscape painting

Ages 5-9 │10am – 12pm │$15 (max capacity: 20)

Ages 10-13 │1 – 3pm │$15 (max capacity: 20)

Landscape painting is a traditional style of art practice. In this workshop, children can paint landscapes they’ve been to, wish to visit, or have completely imagined.

 

Wednesday 11 April

 

Weaving with reused materials – Reverse Garbage

Ages 5-9 │10am – 12pm │$15 (max capacity: 30)

Ages 10-13 │1 – 3pm │$15 (max capacity: 30)

Recycling and reusing materials are important habits to foster in children to bring about awareness of their environmental impact and responsibilities. In this workshop, a facilitator from Reverse Garbage will help children to discover new uses for the things we discard by creating their own woven sculptures from everyday materials commonly found in the recycling bin.

 

My family in clay* – Clay House

Ages 10-13 │10am – 12pm │$15 (max capacity: 15)

Ages 5-9 │1 – 3pm │$15 (max capacity: 15)

Using gingerbread and cookie cutters children will make all their family members, even pets, from clay. The figures will be painted up with underglazes and can be hung up on the wall as a unique family portrait.

Stained glass windows without glass

Ages 5-9 │10am – 12pm │$15 (max capacity: 20)

Ages 10-13 │1 – 3pm │$15 (max capacity: 20)

Kids will make a colourful and vibrant decoration to hang on their windows. Using paper for the frame, and coloured cellophane and tissue paper for the ‘glass’, kids can explore with shapes, sizes and colour to create a traditional masterpiece.

Hat-making workshop

Ages 5-9 │10am – 12pm │$15 (max capacity: 20)

Ages 10-13 │1 – 3pm │$15 (max capacity: 20)

Create and decorate your own wearable art! Kids will make paper hats of different sizes and shapes that they will decorate and wear afterwards.

Let there be music* – Special needs workshop with the Clay House

Ages 8-16 │10 – 11:30am │$15 (max capacity: 10)

This is a special Access class for children with a disability. Make farm animal maracas from clay that you can create music with later.

 

Week 2: Music & Performance Week

 

Workshops throughout this week will focus on music, dance, drama and performance, exploring different ways children can express themselves.

 

Monday 16 April

 

Instrument-making workshop

Ages 5-9 │10am – 12pm │$15 (max capacity: 20)

Ages 10-13 │1 – 3pm │$15 (max capacity: 20)

Kids will make and decorate a variety of instruments out of everyday objects that they can perform with.

 

Tuesday 17 April

 

Hip-hop dance workshop

Ages 5-9 │10am – 12pm │$15 (max capacity: 20)

Ages 10-13 │1 – 3pm │$15 (max capacity: 20)

Learn how to bust a move on the dance floor with some cool dance moves. Kids will learn the basics of hip-hop and jazz, get their bodies moving and have tons of fun!

 

Wednesday 18 April

 

Make music magic – Oli the Octopus sings the octave

Ages 6 months-5 years │10:30 – 11:15am │$10 (max capacity: 15)

Meet puppet friend Oli the Octopus who teaches us about the melody in music ‘DO RE MI FA SO LA TI DO’, along with some fun songs of the world.

 

Let’s sing!

Ages 6-12 │1 – 3pm │$15 (max capacity: 40)

Children will explore drums and percussion with a special focus on singing. Learn an African song in Swahili, sing a Latin Cha Cha Cha, share an Aboriginal song and warm up your lungs with a fun singing competition.

 

Clay Lolly Box*

Ages 6-12 │10 – 12pm │$15 (max capacity: 15)

Come to the Clay House and make a special box to keep your lollies in. You will also make some of your favourite lollies out of clay to put on the lid, which becomes your handle for the box.

 

Thursday 19 April

 

Make music magic – Kevin the Croc loves to rock.

Ages 6 months-5 years │10:30 – 11:15am │$10 (max capacity: 15)

Meet puppet friend Kevin the Croc who shares with us a little bit about Harmony in music, with some great Indigenous and Islander songs.

 

Let’s dance!

Ages 6-12 │1 – 3pm │$15 (max capacity: 40)

Children will explore drums and percussion with Earthbeats with a special focus on dancing. Dance a Cha Cha Cha, do a Bollywood dance, and dance a conga line and limbo too!

 

Friday 20 April

 

Make music magic – Mango Monkey loves to copy

Ages 6 months-5 years │10:30 – 11:15am │$10 (max capacity: 15)

Meet puppet friend Mango Monkey who loves to count The Beat and sing jungle songs with little feet!

 

Let’s drum!

Ages 6-12 │1 – 3pm │$15 (max capacity: 40)

Children will explore drums and percussion with a special focus on drumming. Play some traditional Afro beats, Latin grooves and finish the music workshop with a drum jam.

Three-day Performance Workshops – Liverpool Performing Arts Ensemble Inc

Wednesday 18 – Friday 20 April

Ages 6-12 │10am – 12:30pm │$35 total (max capacity: 20)

 

Children will go through the stages of creating and developing theatre, characters, scenes and stories to cultivate a performance for family and friends at the conclusion of the workshop.

 

Wednesday 18 April – Who am I? Developing the Character

Starting with improvisation games, children will create and develop their own unique character. Experimenting with ways they move and communicate, children will build their character’s personality, qualities, flaws and behaviours that will ultimately culminate in a performance on the theatre stage.

 

Thursday 19 April – The Storyteller! Creating the Scenario

Now that our characters are developed, it is time to set the scene and create the story. Where did all our characters meet? Where did they come from? What exciting adventures will they get up to? And what will they achieve? Children will learn how to link stories and ultimately create a production.

 

Friday 20 April – It’s Showtime! Adding the Final Touch

Working with sets, costumes and props, children will learn how certain theatre resources can enhance a performance. Using these new elements children will rehearse their performance in anticipation of showtime.

 

All family and friends are invited to the children’s performance in our theatre, commencing at 1pm.

 

*All clay works will be glazed, fired and ready for pick up from the Clay House on Monday 30th April from 11am-7pm.
