Join us for Women In Sport, as we present an exhibition, forum and school's engagement program which observes and analyses women and sport through an arts and cultural lens.

Inspirational Talk by Frances and Melissa Eustace
26 February, 12.30 – 1.30pm
Thelma and Louise... Fran and Mel... mother and daughter will give an outstanding perspective on the family life of a person with an intellectual disability. Share their uplifting and inspiring journey filled with humour, courage and success. Gain a powerful understanding of how they have become sought after community and corporate speakers through their achievements in fundraising, dance and sport.

Experience first hand how their partnership has allowed Mel to achieve her dream. Celebrate their joy of being selected as coach and player in the Australian Special Olympics softball team which participated in the World Summer Games in Athens 2011.

Onside
9 February to 24 March, 2013
Artworks referencing gender stereotyping, sexualisation of women’s bodies and notions of femininity will engage audiences to think more deeply about a range of ideas and will provide an entry point into contemporary art. The artists approach the topical and relevant themes in innovative and engaging ways with the intention of opening up a broader discussion about these issues.

Artists include: Nicole Breedon, Lauren Brincat, David Caird, Montalbetti + Campbell, Tarryn Gill and Pilar Mata Dupont, Angela Ellsworth, Jenny Evans, Lorrie Graham, Ponch Hawkes, Sahlan Hayes, Petrina Hicks, Deborah Kelly, Laresa Kosloff, Richard Lewer, Belinda Mason, David Moore, Louise Paramor, Elvis Richardson, Nick Selenitsch, Robin Sellick, Toni Wilkinson, Jodie Whalen and Anne Zahalka.

Girls Get Active School's Gala Day
Friday 8 March, 8.30am
This special event will be part of International Women’s Day celebrations run in conjunction with the Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre’s Onside exhibition and Women in Sport Initiative on Friday 8 March 2013. Onside is an art exhibition which examines the complex issues relating to women and sport through an arts and cultural lens. School girls from up to 20 high schools will be invited to participate in a variety of fun, safe and inclusive physical activities to highlight the importance of women and girls involvement in sport.

The day will begin at 8.30am and include:
- An exclusive Inspirational Speakers session where girls will listen to prominent Australian female athletes, talk about their sporting experiences and achievements, followed by an opportunity for Q&A.
- A Girls’ Breakfast which will give participants an opportunity to interact with speakers.
- A tour of the Onside exhibition.
- Participation in sporting activity stations offering skills and modified games from a selection of traditional and modern sports.

Who can attend?
Female high school students from years 7-12
The cost for any required transport to and from the venue will need to be covered by the school.

Women In Sport Forum
The Women in Sport Forum is a two-day event taking place on Friday 15 and Saturday 16 March. The event complements the Onside the Women in Sport exhibition, a contemporary arts exhibition delving into the world of women’s sport and coming up with some surprising images and topics for conversation.

The forum is comprised of a variety of exciting panel sessions that examine women’s agency, both socio-political and practical, in the sporting world. The sessions cover topics ranging from social participation in sport to elite athletes, looking particularly at how and why women participate in sport.
Bookings open 1 January 2013.

Friday 15 March
Sessions include a keynote speech and panels examining women’s participation in sport, parenting an athlete, and cross-disciplinary approaches to sport and art.

Women In Sport Public Program

From 9 February – 24 March, the Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre is offering a variety of public programs for all members of the public. FREE weekend family activities, FREE weekly exercise programs for women, and a FREE Women in Sport Forum, will complement the Onside exhibition.

 

So, come to the Casual Powerhouse Arts Centre for some fun, fitness and inspirational activities!

Come down with the family on the weekend to picnic at Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre and try your hand at the following sports:

Equipment can be used for free from Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre reception with a deposit.

Fun and Fitness!

Casula Powerhouse invites women to participate in FREE yoga, boxing and pilates sessions for the duration of the Onside exhibition. Exercise all parts of your body while increasing your fitness and lowering levels of stress and anxiety!
