Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre presents Performance 4A
Stories Then and Now
Performance 4a presents inspiring Asian Australian theatre in a revelatory storytelling performance directed by celebrated photographer and master storyteller William Yang and writer/broadcaster Annette Shun Wah.
Six storytellers delve into their family’s past to uncover the threads that lead to their lives in contemporary Australia. War robs a father of his children, obliterates a young woman’s village, forces another into a hasty marriage, and thwarts a young man’s aspirations. Yet they persist to reach new homes, new lives and a future for their children. Hear about the heartbroken dancer who becomes a burlesque showgirl; the busy young professional who outsources her quest for a husband; the traveller who finally comes to terms with her cultural homeland; and the charmed life of a child growing up in a family of entertainers. These are universal stories of adversity and triumph, loss and redemption, heartbreak and joy.
Accompanied by images from private collections, Stories Then and Now will surprise, entertain and profoundly move you. It follows on from the success of Performance 4a’s Stories East & West, of which reviewer Lloyd Bradford Syke said “Inspirational. I hope it becomes a phenomenon.” This is a phenomenon you should not miss.
Directed by William Yang and Annette Shun Wah.
