EVENTS: ART MEETS WEST

Art Meets West is a multi-faceted networking event in the Arts for Western Sydney, developed solely by CPAC Youth.

Join us for:
+ A panel talk led by industry leaders
+ An artists’ market featuring Sydney’s upcoming talents in the arts and crafts sector
+ Workshops led by talented individuals ($5 each)

The free event involves sharing industry knowledge through a panel discussion, followed by an arts and crafts market featuring upcoming artists from all over Sydney with goods to showcase and sell. Participants can finish the day off with the opportunity to engage their creative interests in a workshop or two for $5 each.

WHAT'S ON

PANEL DISCUSSION: STATE OF THE ARTS: EXPLORING SYDNEY'S ARTS ECONOMY
10am - 12pm | FREE

Panellists: Toni Bailey, Monica Davidson, Freya Jobbins and Ramesh Mario Nithiyendran

The panel discussion at this year’s Art Meets West features the expertise of artists, a curator and a business professional, representative of the diverse background of the arts landscape in Sydney. The discussion will explore the role artists, curators, administrators and creative business people have in shaping the arts economy in Sydney.


WORKSHOP: STITCHED UP With Polly Burridge
1 - 1.30pm | $5

Stitched Up, is a workshop that focuses on the basic skills of embroidery. The craft form has had a recent resurgence, in contemporary patterns and colours. This workshop will teach participants one pattern designed by the facilitator. Each participant will receive a piece of cross stitch fabric, thread, a sewing needle and instructions for a pattern. The participants will learn basic cross stitch and a running stitch. Ideally the participants will be able to continue the pattern at home and without assistance. 


WORKSHOP: IMPROV FOR ALL With Jack Marsden
1.30 - 2pm  | $5 

Participants can expect to be taken well and truly out of their comfort zone, and learn a little about the function of improvisation in performance and day to day life. This workshop is perfect for anyone involved in the performing arts, curious about acting, or just looking for something a little different!


WORKSHOP: ART & STUFF With Phu Nguyen
1.30 - 2pm  | $5 

Participants will be taught two styles of capturing street art onto an A4-sized frame sheet of recycled wood. Through stenciling, they will be cutting out a created design onto cardboard, which will then be spray painted or rolled on with a paint roller. As an alternative, markers will be used to create a poster in a street art/graffiti style. As a result, participants will be allowed self-expression and the confidence of drawing anywhere, anytime. The user can then take their screen printed piece home.


WORKSHOP: FACE IT! With Freya Jobbins
1.30 - 2pm  | $5  

Participants in this quick 30min workshop will have fun collaging a self portrait,whilst focusing on a group conversation. Getting some helpful hints from eachother and from Freya about how multi-tasking and multi-skilling and sharing ofskills is essential aspect about surviving as an independent artist. 

Be ready to share information and experiences!


THE POWER OF MAPS With Monica Davidson
2 - 2.30pm  | $5  

Goal setting is a concept that lots of people talk about, but not many people know how to follow through. It’s also pretty easy to set goals for your creative career or business, but staying motivated is tough. This fun and friendly workshop is an easy guide to setting goals, making maps, and figuring out how to get where you want to go. Participants will get a resources booklet and a practical tool called a Goal Matrix to help them not only set goals, but follow through and make those dreams happen.

Bring a sketchbook and pen, you’ll be writing and drawing!

TONI BAILEY

Toni Bailey is a Curator at Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre, leading the delivery of contemporary exhibitions that are relevant and engaging to the culturally diverse communities of South West Sydney. Previously she was the Gallery Manager at Grantpirrie Gallery, Program Manager at Canberra Contemporary Art Space and Curator Public Programs Craft ACT. Toni holds a degree in Visual Art, Canberra School of Art and a Graduate Diploma in Art History and Curatorship, Australian National University. She was a recipient of an Alan Sisley Memorial Fellowship 2015, Gordon Darling Travel Scholarship in 2007 and ANU Graduate Residency Award in 1995.

MONICA DAVIDSON

Monica Davidson has never had a ‘proper’ job - she has been self-employed as a journalist and filmmaker since her teenage years. After freelancing and setting up her own production company in the early 1990s, Monica started offering help to other creatives with their businesses, and twenty years later is a renowned expert in the field of creative industries and arts entrepreneurship. She runs workshops, delivers keynotes and presentations, mentors individual practitioners and consults to larger arts organisations. She is a regular guest lecturer on creative entrepreneurialism at institutions including AFTRS and NIDA, and is the author of the Australian version of Freelancing for Dummies. In 2013 Monica was appointed as the first Creative Industries Business Advisor by the NSW Small Business Commissioner, and the following year completed her Masters in Screen Business at AFTRS, focusing on the benefits of mentoring for women in film. Monica was recently named as one of the Westpac 100 Women of Influence for her work in the creative industries. In 2016 her award-winning company The Creative Plus Business Group joined the City of Sydney Creative Spaces project. In her down time Monica enjoys movies, family time, pink champagne and the gentle art of pub karaoke.

FREYA JOBBINS

Freya Jobbins is a contemporary artist living and working in South West Sydney. Her art practice includes assemblage, collage, installation and printmaking.

Better known for her plastic assemblages created from deconstructed dolls and plastic children’s toys, Freya also creates larger site specific installations and sculptures.

A selected finalist in:  the inaugural Tom Bass Prize for Figurative Sculpture 2016, PARAMOR Art & Innovation Prize 2015, Highly commended at Hidden @ ROOKWOOD 2015, Woollahra Small Sculpture Prize finalist 2012 & 2014, Willoughby Sculpture Prize 2012, and Fishers Ghost Art Prize 2004-2015. Winner of Sculpture in the Vineyard 2014 and winner of the Clearwater Sculpture Prize 2015. In the Goulburn Regional Art Gallery Collection.                                                                       

Exhibiting regionally, nationally and internationally in over 20 group shows and she has had 4 solo shows in Sydney and Melbourne. International shows Tel-Aviv, Israel Toy Art & Design Exhibition l 2013, SHOETINGstar, 5 Sinne&Mehr, Klagenfurt in Austria 2015, prints in New York 2009 and in September this year Redbull Gallery in Detroit.  A series of Freya’s masks which were commissioned and featured in TUSH, German Fashion magazine March 2016 issue. Currently she has one of her assemblage works on display at the EXPLORATORIUM San Francisco. Panelists

RAMESH MARIO NITHIYENDRAN

Ramesh Mario Nithiyendran is a contemporary artist who lives and works in Sydney, Australia. He has exhibited widely nationally and internationally in exhibitions such as the Art Gallery of South Australia's flagship exhibition, the 2016 Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art as well as presenting a solo project at the National Gallery of Australia in 2016. In 2014, Nithiyendran was awarded the 2014 UNSW Visual Arts Fellowship (emerging) administered through Artspace and Arts NSW. In 2015, he was the winner of the 2015 Sidney Myer Fund Australian Ceramic Award, Australia’s richest and premier award for artists working in the medium of ceramics.  Nithiyendran’s work is held in various collections, including the National Gallery of Australia, The Art Gallery of South Australia, Artbank and the Shepparton Art Museum.  He is represented by Sullivan + Strumpf,
