One Past Liverpool will exhibit Australia's most important artists and its most exciting emerging artist’s together, side-by-side.
One Past Liverpool marks the 25th anniversary of Casula Powerhouse as an arts centre. To consider this milestone we have returned to our archives to explore the many exhibition histories of this place. Through a Creative Development Intensive, we invited a group of creatives under the age of 25 to engage these archives – and the many prominent Australian artists, curators and producers behind its projects – to develop new works that reflects on the many passages of time taken by this place. These new commissions are exhibited alongside the artworks and artists that have helped transform this place into a premier Western Sydney Arts Centre.
One Past Liverpool recognises that this place is never still, static or fixed; it is, instead, always growing and always pushing at the boundaries of what you think it might be becoming.
One Past Liverpool will also feature works from Off The Tanks, a two part graffiti art project that commences as a graffiti battle during our August CPAC Live, and culminates in champions’ works on the gallery walls of the One Past Liverpool exhibition. Off The Tanks, and it’s inclusion in One Past Liverpool cements the legal graffiti tanks behind our building as fundamental components to grasping our identity as community arts centre.

In 1998 Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre commissioned Ron Smith and Dr Sally Gray to create a concept for a permanent site-specific installation at Casula Railway Station. 'Casula Colossi' recalls the riverside ‘pleasure gardens’ that brought hundreds of people to the river and train station between 1910 - 1950.
“We wanted to create something so fabulous (fabled) that people couldn't miss it. We wanted to re-establish a sense of arrival at a special place. We wanted a design which was friendly, accessible, inclusive and delightful. We wanted something which would get people talking about Casula as a special locality.” (Dr Sally Gray and Ron Smith, 1999)
This public work was never constructed. It only exists as the artists’ render.
