CUBA BAILA & CON CLAVE GUAGUANCO CLUB
Cuba Baila is a community of fun loving people who create a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere, forming friendships through their passion for Cuban dance, music and fitness. Founder, Director and Instructor Yarima Gavilan Herrera is a Cuba born and trained, international performer and entertainer, and Australia’s only authentic professional female Cuban dancer.

KARIFI & THE AFRICAN UNION DANCERS
In the spirit of African traditions, Karifi brings to Australian audiences their own rendition of African drumming, dances, values and experiences. From the gentle steps of the Adowadancer to the thumping footsteps of the Mamprusi drummer, we bring Africa to you.

ROOTS
Roots Percussion Group performs original compositions based upon Afro-Latin and World traditions of folkloric drumming. Featuring melodic rhythm, atmospheric guitar, driving bass, and hypnotic chants, their performances explore the infinite possibilities of rhythm: raw, explosive, and intricate.The group features a line-up of extremely talented and renowned musicians: Aykho Akriff,Giorgio RojasAdm VentouraDave RodriguezLuis Robalino and Vincent Sebastianplaying a variety of exotic percussion instruments, bass, guitar, and vocals.

Roots has played to sold-out shows at 505, The Basement, Sydney Fringe Festival and Darling Harbour Fiesta and are currently about to release their long-awaited debut EP. 

INKUMBURWA DANCE GROUP
Awarded at the Celebrate African-Australian Awards as one of the most outstanding cultural performers in NSW, Inkumburwa Dance Group proudly present the richness and the greatness of Rwandan culture. They showcase their culture through different dances, rhythms and beats as well as their wonderful and colourful outfits called Umushanana or Umukenyero.

WORKSHOPS

JUNK PERCUSSION WORKSHOP
Founded by Master Dancer Lucky Lartey, Jamestown Collective promotes and celebrates the reuse, recycling and the rich history of African innovation through performance and workshops.

Workshop participants will:

  • Make their own junk percussion instruments
  • Play their self-made instruments
  • Take home a recycled percussion instrument
  • Learn about innovative ways to recycle and create
  • Learn about African culture and about innovation and how to create something from limited resources

4 ELEMENTS AFRO LATIN DANCE WORKSHOP
Facilitated by Uruguayan-born dancer Mariu Meneses with live percussion by Ney Arrua

In this workshop, you will learn basic Afro-Latin interpretations of the elements through your body, tools that you will be able to use in many genres of dance/music and many aspects of every day life. On this particular workshop, we will focus on applying these 4 elements of dance to Afro-Uruguayan music, using them to enhance the experience and liberate the individual body parts.

CARNIVAL RHYTHMS PERCUSSION WORKSHOPS
These fun workshops will provide beginners with the experience of playing traditional Latin American drums in a group. Rhythms consist of simple and intricate parts to form complex group rhythms that can be traced back to indigenous and African cultures of Latin America.

Using congas, bongos, cowbells, cajons, claves, maracas, and voice, participants will be instructed on how to play the various instruments and how to integrate them to form fun and energetic rhythms. The rhythms will encompass traditional styles from Brazil, Colombia, Peru, Cuba, Dominican Republic and Uruguay. Vincent and his crew are experienced facilitators and professional percussionists with extensive careers in the music industry.

PAN-AFRICAN PERCUSSION WORKSHOPS
In the spirit of African traditions, Karifi brings their own rendition of African drumming, values and experiences. From the gentle steps of the Adowa dancer to the thumping footsteps of the Mamprusi drummer, we bring Africa to you.
