Reconstructing the cancer experience

Launched in 2016, Casula Powerhouse Liverpool in association with the Liverpool and Macarthur Cancer Therapy centres, developed a series of art workshops that provided the local community with an opportunity to demonstrate their creative skills in aid of cancer support. A cancer diagnosis has a profound impact upon the patient and those that care for them. Bravery Unmasked is an initiative which provides the opportunity to engage with a radiotherapy mask, which is a necessary restriction to immobilise patients during radiotherapy. The manipulation of the mask as physical object permits an exploration of the experience of cancer. The process of reclaiming and transforming the mask serves to raise support and awareness for the journey undertaken by both patient, family and friends.

The works have been produced by cancer patients, their families and friends and local schools, both individually and through workshops facilitated by Dianne McClaughlin at Liverpool and Macarthur Cancer Therapy centres and Casula Powerhouse. The exhibition also features contributions by Western Sydney artists.

The majority of the masks exhibited will also be for sale for a nominal sum with all proceeds directed towards the continuing development of partnerships between community art and health organisations through South Western Sydney Health.

Exhibition launch: Friday 25 August, 6 - 9pm
