A group of five queer women of colour poets and musicians make a documentary while on a Kickstarter-funded tour of bars and living rooms in the US and Canada. We see them riding in their tour bus, visiting friends and estranged family members, meeting supporters, performing live and coming face-to-face with a chilling threat of racial violence. More importantly, we hear them. They have a lot to talk about, on and off stage, and in fact everything they say is well worth a listen.

The film features the incredible talents of Jade Foster, Be Steadwell, Jonquille Rice, T'ai Freedom Ford, and Eli Turner. Their journey is interspersed with interviews with leading black feminist authors, academics and historians, including Nikki Finney, CC Carter, Dr Alexis Pauline Gumbs and Alexis Deveaux, speaking about subjects that at times parallel the work – and the personal lives – of the five performers.

It's a fascinating look at resistance, empowerment, community, connection and creativity. Unique, uplifting and inspiring, The Revival: Women and the Word was directed by queer filmmaker Sekiya Dorsett and co-produced by Andrea Boston and Jade Foster (co-founder of ‘The Revival', the salon-styled poetry tour). Don't miss it.

Festival guest: Be Steadwell, and introduced by Candy Royalle
Festival Bar: Performance in festival bar after the film

Presented with: Word Travels, The Red Rattler, Groovescooter, and Candy Royalle
