MUSIC: SYDNEY SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA SUNDAY SERENADE
5 Aug 2018 | 2:00pm - 3:40pmBook Tickets
Spend Sunday afternoon being serenaded by the young talents of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra Fellowship program! They’re performing music by a line-up of composers not much older than themselves – the 25-year-old Brahms, Mozart (also 25) and Erwin Schulhoff (27) – in a concert that’s bound to leave you smiling. Brahms’s Serenade No.1 began life as chamber music before his friends told him it needed a full orchestra.
Now Jorge Rotter has reconstructed the original version for nine musicians, without losing any of Brahms’s expansive forest inspiration (listen for the horn!). Mozart’s Quartet for oboe and strings is upbeat and utterly elegant. And Schulhoff’s Suite comes to us from 1920s Berlin, where he would dance his nights away, intoxicated by the new rhythms of jazz. From the sublime to the sassy!
About The Fellows:
Recognised as one of the world’s leading orchestral training programs, each year the SSO Fellowship brings together up to 16 of Australia’s brightest young orchestral players, on the cusp of a professional career. These exceptional young musicians, representing all the sections of the symphony orchestra, have been selected through a national audition process to participate in an intensive year-long program of mentoring, performances, workshops and immersion in the world of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. You will find Fellowship alumni in concert halls around the world, including 11 past Fellows who now hold permanent positions with the SSO.
