In this term students will investigate the relationship between identification and representation through imagery of themselves. The students will be introduced to the concepts of personal symbols and visual metaphors as modes of communicating aspects of their individual identities. Each week’s class will begin with a group discussion of the investigation, supported by works on display and reference images, while also drawing parallels to contemporary cultural examples. Each week will conclude with a round table discussion and sharing of work. All materials will be supplied.

Term 4 Brief overview by week

Week 1 | Self-portrait with mirrors
Students will be lead to produce a deep detail rendering of their facial features. As a group the students will look at a brief history of portraiture with examples by Gentileschi, Rembrandt, Van Gogh and Kahlo

Week 2 | Altered self-portraits:
Students will revisit the concept of portraiture as showing the physical representation of an individual and will then be invited to extend this understanding through the altered self-portrait. The students will look at the works of artists such as Warhol, Close and Picasso and consider how the material application of medium affects the reading of the image.

Week 3 | Objects and symbols of importance
In this workshop students are invited to bring an object from home with which they identify, this may be a particular story, a family heirloom or a favourite toy. This workshop will involve studying the relationship between the students and the objects and methods with which to portray this. Focus artists will include Kahlo, Munch, Ensor, Magritte and Dali.

Week 4 & 5 | Creating your own symbol
Following the discussion of the previous weeks, students will be encouraged to create a symbol that they are able to identify with. Students are welcome to use symbols from nature, religion and individually designed motifs that visually portray elements of the student’s personality. This will be explored as a final artwork that will combine self-portraiture with the students personally created symbol. All previous artists will be revisited in this session.
