The autumn school holiday activities are programmed in conjunction with The 64th Blake Prize. These workshops are focused on spiritual craft making with a universal meaning.

Monday 26 September : ANIMAL TALE WEAVER

AGES: 3 - 6 years | TIME: 10am – 11am | COST: $5 per person | BOOK HERE

Children will create a soft and tactile wild animal sculpture inspired by artist Louise Weaver. You will be using lots of soft materials including colourful fabric, stuffing, feathers, wool, pom poms and fake fur. No sewing is required!

Then, huddle up on some blankets and pillows with your imaginary friend and hear some stories. While you’re here, you can also sign up for your very own library card with the Liverpool City Library network.

Monday 26 September : SOFT ZOMBIES

AGES: 5+ | TIME: 1:30pm – 2:30pm | COST: $5 per person | BOOK HERE

In this class you will learn how to soften and manipulate your body to dance like a soft and gooey zombie. You will be a thriller on the dance floor!

Children will learn how to dance like the zombies featured in Michael Jackson’s famous Thriller video.

Tuesday 27 September : SUPERNATURAL BODIES

AGES: 10+ | TIME: 1pm - 3pm | COST: $10 per person | BOOK HERE

Inspired by the work of Patricia Piccinini, you will make a mysterious yet curious alien body. By using stuffed stocking, material and paint, children will build weird and wonderful exaggerated limbs and bodies to create their own shapeshifting alien lifeform.

Tuesday 27 September : OBJECT PLAY

AGES: 8 - 12 | TIME: 1pm - 3pm | COST: $10 per person | BOOK HERE 

This play-building workshop is designed to explore the connection between theatre and objects - through the exploration of the elements, the manipulation (puppeteering) of soft objects and materials. Participants will have a chance to play with different materials like: air, water, clay, cotton and sand to discover how these can be used as an approach to acting and creativity. This workshop will focus on creation through movement, improvisation and collaboration.

Wednesday 28 September : DIY SNAKES & LADDERS

AGES: 6 + | TIME: 1pm - 3pm | COST: $10 per person | BOOK HERE 

Children will create and take part in a large-scale, colourful game of Snakes and Ladders. At the beginning of the class participants will create a fabric collage that includes an instruction for an action in the game. Once all squares are complete we will roll the giant fluffy dice as each player manoeuvres across the giant board game that has been collaboratively created.

Wednesday 28 September : SCHOOL OF SOFT KNOCKS

AGES:5 - 8 | TIME:11am - 12:30pm | COST: $10 per person | BOOK HERE 

School of Hard Knocks is an introduction to group physical theatre. Working collaboratively you will focus on building an imaginary inflatable sculpture in response to the 8-metre tall inflatable rabbits by artist Michael Parakowhai that will feature in the Soft Core exhibition.

Thursday 29 September : FANCY FLAGS

AGES: 5 + | TIME: 10:30am – 12:30pm | COST: $5 per person | BOOK HERE 

Design and create your own customised flag using a fabric collage technique known as applique. The second part of this workshop will include a flag march dance workshop. Represent your unique personality through art and let your fancy flag fly!

Friday 30 September : FOAM FORMS

AGES: 8+ | TIME: 10:30am – 12:30pm | COST: $10 per person | BOOK HERE 

Inspired by work in the upcoming exhibition Soft Core Foam Forms will see you transforming the ordinary into works of art. By exploring the use of foam to build and create you will have the opportunity to experience the challenges of this soft material.

Tuesday 4 October : DROP BOX - CLAYHOUSE with Selma Fida

AGES: 10+ | TIME: 10am – 12pm & 1pm - 3pm | COST: $15 per person / per workshop | BOOK HERE

Join Selma Fida for Drop Box this holiday as you learn that accidents can be creative as well as unexpected. Drop Box will show the skills necessary to create a perfect ceramic box… and then persuade you to deliberately drop it, gently! Suddenly each person has a unique soft object and you will then learn how to craft this into a positive individual outcome. So come and be positively soft this spring holiday.

Tuesday 4 October : SOFT CENTRE - CLAYHOUSE with Natalie Valiente

AGES: 10+ | TIMES: 10am – 12pm & 1pm - 3pm | COST: $15 per person / per workshop | BOOK HERE 

Using Claes Oldenburg’s, Wedding Souvenir 1966 as an example of material transformation, this ceramic workshop transforms a temporary soft object into a permanent replica.

Join Natalie Valiente for Soft Centre this holiday and make a ceramic cake slice. In this workshop you’ll be shown how to create your very own slice of Pop Art that has a little space inside for something special of your own.

Wednesday 5 October : IN FORM FACES - CLAYMATION WORKSHOP

AGES: 6 - 13 | TIME: 10:30am - 3pm | COST: $30 per person | BOOK HERE

Tony Oursler conjures bizarre characters and surreal narratives through the use of multimedia projection on 3D forms. In Form Faces will offer children the chance to delve into their imagination to create their own surreal narrative by creating their own Claymation video. With the help of artist Belinda Watson participants will create their own character and story and then make it come to life with clay.

Wednesday 5 October : KOOL KOALAS

Love fridge magnets, inspired by artist Rosie Deacon, children will create their own koala fridge magnets with the help of a variety of neon materials such as pom poms feathers, cord, beads and rhinestones.

Influenced by Tully Moore’s artwork children will create their own multi-faced costume. By painting different versions of themselves on each four sides of a box and combining this with a fabric costume creation on their body children will make their very own wearable artwork.

Thursday 6 October : FLOATING FOOD

Ever wanted to make your own inflatable art work? Using plastic bags, sticky tape, coloured markers and a healthy dose of imagination Floating Food will give you the chance to create your very own food inspired inflatable artwork.

Friday 7 October : SOFT CITY DISTRICT

AGES: 8+ | TIME: 11am - 1pm | COST: $10 per person | BOOK HERE

Influenced by the soft monuments of Kath Temin, participants will collaborate and create a large-scale temporary soft city-scape. Come contribute your skills to the temporary construction of the soft city district: a temporary large-scale memorial to city living.

Saturday 8 October : SOFT SWITCH SHOP

AGES: 8+ | TIME: 11am - 1pm | COST: $10 per person | BOOK HERE

The Soft Switch Shop will be open for business one day only. Simply select an item from the display and take it to one of the Soft Switch counters. It is here that you can choose how to re-create that object into something SQUISHY, FLOPPY, FLUFFY, DROOPY, SEE-THROUGH, COLOURFUL……or whatever interpretation of SOFT you like! Imagine soft phones, soft tools, soft bikes… and much more. Come and find your soft spot in this soft shop.
