WORKSHOPS: FOAM CORPS WITH SIMON YATES
29 Oct 2016 | 10:30am - 1:30pmBook Tickets
The carved marble bust is a well-known traditional form of western sculpture. The likenesses of Kings, Queens, poets, gods, noblemen and noblewomen have often been immortalised in carved stone. For the exhibition, Soft Core, artist Simon Yates has created a series of busts that tweak this sculptural tradition by carving his iconic subjects out of discarded foam. By collecting foam from unwanted furniture and carving into it Yates has created a collection of iconic busts that initially trick the eye into perceiving the soft material as a more rigid, inflexible substance.
As part of Soft Core at Casula Powerhouse join artist Simon Yates as he delivers a workshop that will teach you how to chip away at developing your own sculptural creations as you carve a form out of foam.
Simon Yates is a Sydney based artist who has exhibited nationally and internationally his art practice assumes many forms including, remote control papier-mache walking robots. Whatever form his work assumes Yates offers the viewer a new perspective to engage with objects, materials and subject matter that are often overlooked but are always right under your nose.
