School Holidays here at Casula Powerhouse are a place for experimentation, exploration, and curiosity. With a team of arts educators experienced in workshop facilitation and learning, children get to experience the best of Casula Powerhouse’s programs, allowing them to be inspired, creative, and imaginative during the holiday season.

We have made our September School Holiday program available online, ensuring that young creatives are still able to take part in workshops from the comfort and safety of home.

Mythical Creatures
Friday 24 September 2021
10am - 11am
Ages 5-12

Join our fully qualified Art Therapist and educator Di in an online art class where your child will learn to design and colour their own mythical being created using paper and coloured pencils or textas/crayons/pens/paints. Each creation will be based off the Oaxacan tradition of Alebrijes where your creature will come to life.

Alebrijes are brightly colored Mexican folk art sculptures of fantastical (fantasy/mythical) creatures. The first alebrijes, along with use of the term, originated with Pedro Linares in the 1940’s. Linares had a dream while unwell where unusual beings appeared such as a donkey with butterfly wings and a rooster with bull horns, upon recovery and waking he began recreating the creatures he saw in cardboard and papier-mâché and called them Alebrijes.

This workshop will run for an hour live on Zoom and all you will need is a bit of paper and any type of colouring material. Recommended for ages 5-12.
