SYDNEY FILM FESTIVAL AND CASULA POWERHOUSE PRESENT
A LOVE SONG

This achingly beautiful romantic drama centres on a widow waiting for an old flame to visit her lakeside campsite in Colorado. Sundance (Next), Berlinale (Panorama) 2022.

There’s something special about watching a superb lead performance from an actor who’s forever been cast in supporting roles. Such is the case here with Dale Dickey, who’s appeared in 130 productions including Winter’s Bone and Hell or High Water over the past 27 years. Dickey’s in every scene as Faye, a loner living off the grid. The visitor she’s waiting for is Lito (Wes Studi, also superb), the high school sweetheart she hasn’t seen for decades. The dialogue is sparse but the emotion is rich and deep as these widowed people engage in a slow and tender waltz of memory, longing and love. Max Walker-Silverman’s impressive debut is gorgeously filmed on 16mm and dotted with lovely shots of absurdist humour.

Both Dickey and Studi deliver deeply spiritual performances, harmonising their gazes and bodily moves in an achingly restrained dance, against nature's mystical grandeur. ’Tomris Laffly, Harper’s Bazaar

It's uncommon to stumble upon a first-time director with a sensitivity to such feelings, but Walker-Silverman's clearly a romantic.’ Peter Debruge, Variety

The intimacy between these characters is quietly soul-stirring.’ Jon Frosch, The Hollywood Reporter
