Loss is an exhibition exploring the impact of leaving a homeland, by those who have.

Australia is a country where a large percentage of the population have moved to Australia (or their ancestors have) from other parts of the world.  In Liverpool Council area 41% of people stated on the 2016 Census that they were born overseas.

Many of the people born overseas have fled their homelands to find refuge and a safer way to live. Past Australian Government policies have also impacted on Aboriginal communities, forced off country, their populations decimated, and children separated from their families.

Each of the artists featured in this exhibition are from Western Sydney and have a practice that explores the reasons, impacts and losses of leaving their homelands. They comment, from their own experiences, on difficult topics including war, torture, stolen generation and offer personal insights into reconnecting with culture, home, family, and friends.

Please join us for the exhibition launch of LOSS, an exhibition exploring the impact of leaving a homeland, by those who have. Featuring artists: Damon AMB, Miriam Cabello, Blak Douglas, Jagath Dheerasekara, Linda Sok

On the same day, we will be launching George Gittoes: on being there, a masterfully curated exhibition by Dr Rod Pattenden which explores the expansive, and still evolving career of one of this country’s most fearless artists: George Gittoes.

The exhibition launch will feature a special performance by Soul Crime.

During your lunch break, join us on a guided tour of the current exhibitions on display - including George Gittoes: on being there and LOSS. Take a deeper look at the art on display, discuss the ideas behind the exhibitions and explore the history of Casula Powerhouse. The guided tours will be run by our Public Programs and Education Team.

The Exhibition Café is about opening the conversation on diverse topics relating to the exhibitions at Casula Powerhouse Art Centre. It is an opportunity to have informal discussions with a range of professionals, including artists. The Exhibition Café is open to, and respectful of, people of all communities and belief systems.

It will run fortnightly for 4 sessions. This program will align with ideas and themes from - George Gittoes: on being there, Loss and GINA.

Meet fellow art-loving friends and find out tips and hints for advancing your art practice through a series of professional development sessions. The sessions are guided  by an experienced practicing artist who will encourage participants to develop both creative and professional skills

Casula Powerhouse is launching Generator: Master Art Classes. Our first session is led by artist Jagath Dheerasekara to celebrate the exhibition Loss.  Jagath will go into the creative art-making processes of creating and developing a political and social art practice.
